Jet. You either love them, or you think they're shite.  And, if you think they're shite, well chances are you haven't really heard them or seen them play live yet.

Well this is the part where I try and convince you that Jet really do live up to the huge hype surrounding them. Forget The Strokes, forget The Vines - this is the real deal.  Dirty, sweaty rock at its best. Listen to Jet and you'll feel like going out, getting drunk and trashing some hotel rooms.

Discovered a couple of years ago at the seedy Duke of Windsor Hotel in Melbourne, Jet have quickly become an astonishing success, both here and overseas, particularly in the UK. Why? Well, who knows. That's how the music industry works.

I've posted a couple of songs, first being Are You Gonna Be My Girl, which is my favourite Jet track to date. The single isn't actually out in Australia yet.. it is released here on 1 September, but for some reason everyone else gets it a week earlier.  The new single will also have Last Chance on it which has been receiving a shit load of airplay in recent times. Last Chance is also available for download below.

Next song is Roll Over DJ, which can be found on the limited edition Dirty Sweet EP. There were only 1000 vinyl copies pressed initially of this EP before they released it on CD a couple of months ago.

I can't be bothered going into any real detail here, I think the songs will speak for themselves.  The debut album will be out a week or so after the single is released, and will be called Get Born. Check out www.jettheband.com or www.jet.live.com.au for more information.

Hey, uh, I don't want to be, um, hm, like pedantic or anything (y'know) but, um, you *have* heard the strokes, right? I mean, you aren't just saying forget about them when Are You Gonna Be My Girl is A TOTAL FUCKING RIP-OFF OF NEW YORK CITY COPS are you. Mean, y'know, seems kinda, well, stupid. Really.

shut up you worthless cunts
why dont u ban america as a subdomain angsty

Comment posted by: smak at September 10, 2003 01:06 PM

isn't 'are you gonna be my girl' a lot more like 'lust for life'? of course the answer is yes, but it's still a catchy tune.

Comment posted by: lukeiyo-e at September 10, 2003 02:36 PM

You could make song comparisons all day long. Disect every song you've ever heard and compare the melody , rythmn and vocal styles etc of every band ever.
Or you could stop whinging and just enjoy it.
Just like this site. Atleast angsty is even bothering, which is more than i can say for the rest of you lazy bunch :D

Please, please, don't judge us all by our absolute worst examples. As a country we're weirdly and pathetically insecure yet quite aggressive.

Comment posted by: Jordan at September 11, 2003 02:40 PM

oh so the newsflash is pop music is slightly derivative? dang some of the geniuses here should be writing for Rolling Stone. Insight like that gets you 12 pages and a cover these days.

And for the dickhead who thought they were being profound by comparing 'are you gonna be my girl?' to the strokes; the bassline was first lifted from Golden Earring's 1974 track radar love, jerk off, and it's one of the most borrowed riffs in music history, iggy pop being only the most blatant offender.

go jet. catholic school boys rule.

It seems like the posts on this site have gotten a lot more agressive since the site went back up

Comment posted by: Liam at September 12, 2003 04:46 AM

pfft i love jet.. they might not be doing anything "new" but who is these days? honestly, jet fucking kick ass and all of you pretentious wankers out there should go and see 'em live so you really understand what its about. perhaps you should try getting out of the house and going to a jet gig instead of sitting at home listening to your mp3s before you pass judgment.

and thanks wendy for your non-scathing comments on my posts.. by the way i'm female.

Comment posted by: blacklamb at September 12, 2003 10:22 PM

it's probably not even the end of the line.. but the supreme's 1966 song 'you can't hurry love' borrows heavily from jet... or it could be the other way around.

Comment posted by: lukeiyo-e at September 14, 2003 08:45 AM

More aggressive? Yeah, and how!

Aw c'mon, maybe the problem here is my written expression rather than a love of derivative crap on this website. It isn't Jets 'familiar' riffs that irritate and annoy this consumer, its the ripped off attitude.

That The Strokes ripped off countless bands before them isn't lost on me, what *is* is the totally derivative, and I might add cynical, attitude that Jet display. It's that swagger down to within a quarter of an inch of every other dirty skinny pale guitar-boy band, the same-same dress sense, the same (insert, repeat ad naseum).

Everything about them is a facsimile of one selling point or another from any number of popular bands. And so were The Strokes, btw, which was supposed be a second-level joke in my payout of Jet but, y'know, feel free to take yourself Henry Kissinger seriously.

And that's what makes *me* go 'Jet? spew!'

And as for the self-indulgent record, who doesn't love a rehash band? Some of my favourite bands are blac ... er, derivative. Flaming Lips, Turbonegro, Regurgitator, etc. The difference being that what they rip off they infuse with their own ("unique") charm ... be it attitude, delivery, spin, what have you.

So, where do you keep the olive branches around here?

I want you to write stuff on this site Niqui.

The cover of Dirty Sweet confuses me .... can I be pro-rock mullet and anti-"Disco sucks" at the same time?

Comment posted by: Neets at September 16, 2003 07:18 PM

Jet do live up to the hype! Well, to an extent anyway. It's amazing!

I bought their album today after listening to these MP3s. Sure, they're not the greatest band ever, but that doesn't mean their music isn't worth listening to.

Blah, blah, etc.

Comment posted by: Xenex at September 17, 2003 12:14 AM

Oh, but you don't mean that and I go sulk now, Angst.

B: You dont need a cable modem.

Yeah but the stuff I downloaded was shit. I cannae find anything to post. There's only crap music out there. It sucks. I'm trying my best though :D

Comment posted by: secretpint at September 24, 2003 12:04 PM

JET ROCKS! Don't knock a song just because it might sound like something else. THERE IS NOTHING NEW IN MUSIC - IT'S ALL BEEN DONE. IT'S HOW IT'S DONE THAT MAKES IT GOOD.

Oh, and of course I'm backing the good AUSSIE rock :D

Comment posted by: Gurney at December 12, 2003 03:27 PM

I really don't see what the hype is with Jet though, yeah i don't mind some of their stuff, but it's not really special, there's alot of bands just like it out there. So they're aussie, good for them, i know i should support guys who went to my school and all, but like i said, i fail to see what's so special. Basically i don't think they were worth how much they signed for, that's probably what pisses me off.
